Can’t you just picture yourself in a place like this? You wander off the beaten path of a hiking trail and suddenly you’re rewarded with this incredible sight — a hidden waterfall in the woods, untouched and completely secluded. No footprints, no signs of life, just the sound of water and the feeling that you’ve stepped into a dream. Have you ever stumbled onto something like that in real life? A fantastical view!
The Inspiration
Waterfall in the Woods is painting #80, streamed live on Twitch and based on The Joy of Painting S19E6. I was inspired to try this one after watching Nic Hankins, a fantastic Ross Certified Instructor and all‑around great artist, paint his version. I’d always wanted to attempt one of these dramatic waterfall scenes but never quite had the courage. After seeing Nic’s take, I knew I had to give it a shot. Also, I thought it would look pretty cool on stream.

Notes From the Easel
I love how this one turned out. Truly. There’s very little — if anything — I’d go back and change. Everything just clicked, and I’m really pleased with the final result.
Tips for Painting This One
This painting isn’t actually difficult, but there are a few things to keep in mind:
• Mix more color than you think you need. Running out mid‑stream and trying to remix the exact shade is a nightmare.
• Be ready for lots of foliage. You’ll spend a good amount of time with the two‑inch brush. Watch how Bob taps, pushes, and loads the brush. That’s where the magic is.
• Pay close attention to brush loading. My brushes are pretty worn, so I had to load a ton of paint and reload constantly. A drop or two of thinner helps the paint release. Liquid clear might work too. It also might work better with newer, better condition brushes.
If you give this one a try, watch the episode once or twice and really study Bob’s movements. Let me know how yours turns out. I love seeing other versions.
