Shamrock Skies. Painting #60. A St. Patrick’s Day Painting in Green Monochrome

Date painted: March 17, 2019
Size: 16 x 20 canvas
Now here’s something a little different—and a little green. This green monochromatic painting was streamed live on my Twitch channel on St. Patrick’s Day, leaning into the spirit of the day with a fun twist on a classic Bob Ross wet on wet painting technique.
Bob explored monochromatic painting in a few episodes, and I’ve always loved how much depth you can create with just a few shades. For this piece, I went all-in with sap green as the star of the show. It’s a bold choice—earthy, vibrant, and perfect for a landscape that feels both moody and festive.

Difficulties and Tips
Monochromatic paintings are excellent practice for shading and value control. With fewer colors, you’re forced to think more about contrast and composition.
Liquid White first. How to apply Liquid White.
Tree Lines: Use lighter shades for distant trees and gradually darken as you move forward. It’s a simple trick that adds instant depth.
Cloud Drama: I tried shaping the cloud like a shamrock—because why not? It’s harder than it looks to make it feel natural. Some viewers said it looked like a mushroom cloud. Honestly? I see it too. Happy little accidents, right?
The beauty of this medium is how forgiving it is. If something feels off, you can blend, reshape, or layer until it works. It’s easy to correct mistakes happy accidents. That’s part of the fun.
I turned the stream into a time lapse video, so you can watch the whole thing unfold in just a few minutes. It’s a great way to see how the values shift.
This fun little St. Patrick’s Day painting is actually available in my Etsy shop. It’s a one-of-a-kind piece with a seasonal twist—perfect for collectors who love something a little offbeat.
