Mountain River is my 41st painting. I had begun painting on a somewhat regular basis again. Not nearly at the rate I was going when I lived in England and first started. Also, I was continuing with my Bob Ross binge on YouTube. It takes a while to get through 31 seasons!

When this painting came up I decided to give it a go for three reasons.

  • I wanted to try out the partial black gesso canvas again.
  • I wanted to try a different cloud technique.
  • I wanted to try a different color mountain with a different color highlight and shadow.

As I’ve mentioned, when I choose a Bob Ross Painting to follow it’s usually because I want to learn how to paint a new feature or use a new technique from that video.

This one is from S19E2 of The Joy of Painting.

Here are the colors and equipment used.

Colors

Equipment

  • Black Canvas
  • optional if you don’t want to use the black gesso

If you watched the video and see the finished painting from Bob, you will see that mine looks a bit different. That’s because I made a mistake happy accident with the black gesso under coat. So I made it into a little land mass and added some stones. What I do like is the mountains. I enjoyed making a different type of mountain, meaning a non snow capped mountain. The cloud technique is rather simple. Merely leave some open space in your sky and fill with Titanium White and blend as normal. Another reason I chose this one is to practice highlights with the two inch brush. Bob makes it look soooo easy. Just need to practice a bit more.

I hope you enjoyed seeing this and reading about it. Give it a try yourself and let me know how it turned out. And if you enjoy reading about my happy paintings, share it with your friends.

Happy painting!
