Trying Other Mediums. Watercolors.
We’ve all painted with watercolors once in our lives. Right? Tell me you’ve never got to paint with those watercolor trays from Crayola or whatever. They give those to kids because they’re so easy to clean up.
When I got older, I first tried watercolors because I thought it would be easy. Boy was I wrong. Of all the painting mediums I’ve tried, watercolor is by far the most difficult to handle. There are many ways to get a shade or effect you want but it takes a lot of practice to master it. You need just the right paint to water mix to achieve your desired effects. You can’t just paint one color on top of the other. How much wash should you use? What the heck even is a wash? I’m just throwing a few things out there that I’ve learned so far. I’m far from mastering the art but here are a few things I tried.
The one above was my first attempt. I followed this tutorial. Golden Sunset.
I painted this one while I was recovering from laser eye surgery. Since I couldn’t really go anywhere, I brought some watercolors with me. Again, I followed another tutorial. Pond Sunset.
For this one, I took off the training wheels. I took what little I learned and just tried something of my own. I basically copied my Bonita Bay painting using watercolors.
Watercolors take some getting used to but I love playing with them. My favorite thing about them is how easy they are to clean up. Like the drawing, I’d like to get better at this medium too and to do that, I may stream my practice paintings. I also found this very relaxing to do. You don’t need big canvases, no chemical solvents and they’re more transportable.
These paintings were done in a Mixed Media sketchbook using a watercolor box set. The set has 10 colors and an assortment of brushes. Everything you need to get started.
I’m looking forward to trying more. Stay tuned to see how I progress. Happy painting!
