This scene takes you deep into the wood where you come upon a small clearing and a babbling brook. Across the stream, a beam of sunlight shines upon the meadow beckoning you to explore further. But how do you get across?
Deep Forest Meadow is painting #78. It was painted live on Twitch. Though this is a Bob Ross painting, I was inspired to do it by my recent trip to Maine. At one point while I was there, I took a walk through the woods with my cousin as we used to do as kids. We just hiked along a brook in the woods. We came upon a spot very similar to this. I took some pictures and wanted to compose a painting made of the combined elements. But then I saw a Bob Ross episode that resembled it. That episode was The Joy of Painting S22E12. I will paint that scene one day and this painting gave me some ideas how to capture it.

What I like about this painting. I like all of what’s going on in the middle; how it looks like a beam of sunshine is coming through an opening in the canopy. The little stones in the stream came out great.
I still need to work on mass foliage highlights. What I mean by that is when there is a lot of dark area to be highlighted, I need to do a better job of taking my time and being more deliberate where I place my highlights.
So this is a Bob Ross black gesso painting that doesn’t cover the entire canvas. The challenge when doing one of these is that Bob doesn’t have enough time to explain exactly how id prepped the canvas. He rarely goes into any detail about what he uses to create certain areas of the gesso base. In my case, I used one of those foam brushes. You could use old bristle brushes but I would certainly refrain from using your primary oil paint brushes. Especially if those brushes are the Bob Ross brand.
In the white part of the canvas, apply liquid white like you normally would and then paint in the sky. Since I was following Bob, he forgot to paint in the sky and had to go back and put it in. For me, it was too late. It looks fine but I think it would look better if most of that space was painted in the sky color.
Here’s that gif of Bob effortlessly painting stones. This time for me, it seemed that effortless. The first time I ever tried it was a different story.
