Island in the Wilderness. Painting #72. Easy Bob Ross Landscape in Oils.

You head out for an early morning walk through the woods. The air is quiet, the light soft. You stumble onto an unfamiliar path and decide to follow it. It leads to a lake with a solitary island in the center. Just as the forest clears, the sun begins to rise—casting golden light across the water. The path continues off to the left. Where does it go?

Island in the Wilderness is painting #72, created during my 16th Twitch stream. It’s a full Bob Ross piece—no deviations, just pure Joy of Painting.

I had taken about a month off from streaming and painting due to a trip home to see family. When I got back, I was slammed with work that I didn’t have time to plan a new painting or anything. So, I eased back in with an easy Bob Ross landscape episode to follow and paint on stream.

This painting is from The Joy of Painting S29E1. I chose this one because there wasn’t a lot of technical things to do yet still allowed me to practice my foliage highlights.

Notes From the Easel

There’s not a ton to say about this one. I didn’t vary the foliage highlight colors much, mostly because my Twitch stream started acting up toward the end. I was juggling painting and troubleshooting, so focus slipped.

One critique: the background hills. I left too much space between the layers. If you try this one, make the bottom of the first layer misty, then bring the next layer just slightly forward. That’ll keep the depth tight and atmospheric.

Aside from that—and the lack of color variety in the bushes—I’m pretty happy with it. It got way more likes on Instagram than I expected.
