Quick Lazy River. Painting #61
Quick Lazy River is painting #61. It is so named because I did the Bob Ross episode called Lazy River but I tried to paint it as fast as I could. Recall the first Lazy River. I did that one quickly but on a smaller canvas and it took about 45 minutes. This one took about an hour while streaming on Twitch.
This painting is from S2E10 of the Joy of Painting.

Equipment
Even with doing this same scene once before, it was still impossible to keep up with his speed. There’s hardly anything to it but very difficult to do it as fast as Bob. Sure it could be because you are trying to follow along and do the same scene. Perhaps painting your own creation may increase the speed since you can focus on the canvas.
Difficulties and Tips
Over time I’ve learned to use less paint in the background color of foliage. You want to make it dark but you don’t need it to be too thick. If anything, you want the highlight layer thick when using this technique. Bob’s golden rule is that a thin paint will stick to a thick paint. But I’ve found that it works in reverse also. A thick paint will also stick to a thin paint if that thin paint is used as a base. There’s also a lower chance of mixing mud.
I lost my place at some point and even got a bit ahead of Bob and didn’t follow the episode exactly. When I realized that, I just shut it off and went off script. It’s pretty fun to do that.
This is a good one to practice foliage highlights. It’s also a good one to try if you’re trying to improve your speed. Give it a shot and let me know how it turns out.
Here’s the time lapse I made.
