Northern Lights, part 3. Painting #59

Northern Lights, part 3. Painting #59

Northern Lights, part 3
Date painted: March 16, 2019
Size: 16 x 20 canvas

This is Northern Lights, part 3. Meaning this is the third time that I’ve done this particular scene. Check out Part 1 and Part 2 to see how they all compare. This is also the third painting I streamed on Twitch.

For my Twitch audience, I wanted to show them something cool. And one of the cool things you can do with this technique is the black canvas. I wanted to blow their minds by prepping the canvas first with the under color then showing the magic of applying the titanium white. That’s why I chose a familiar scene like the one in S8E13 of The Joy of Painting.

Difficulties and Tips

Since this is straight from a Bob Ross episode, I’m sure many people have attempted this one before. Here are a couple of tips to remember if you attempt it.

Since I’ve done this one twice before it wasn’t very hard. The difference in this one though is that I actually attempted to put in the cabin. I always struggle with the cabins when I try them but what better way to improve than to practice?

The size of the large knife can work in your favor when painting a cabin. The thing to keep in mind of is the angle you apply the knife. You can get the perspective accurate if you are consistent with the angle of the knife. The width of a typical Bob cabin is two knife lengths at the right angle. The length is also about two knife lengths. I don’t know if I’m explaining this well. Watch Bob when he does it and you may understand what I’m trying to say.

Don’t apply too much liquid clear. A very thin coat is all you need. Just enough to make the undercoat of paint move. You should only need a few dabs on the canvas and then scrub it in.

I’m overall pleased with how everything turned out. You can tell I need more practice with cabins. This one looks old and broken down which, I suppose, adds some character to it.

Feel free to comment if you need any other tips if you attempt this one.

I made this Twitch video into another time lapse and uploaded to YouTube. Check it out.

As I’ve said before recently, I’m doing a lot more with my art now. I’m experimenting with different ways to photograph and edit where necessary. Streaming on Twitch, making time lapse videos. All sorts. If you want to keep up with it all check out all my social media pages listed at the top of the home page. Like, follow, and subscribe. Also check out my Art Store where you can have this painting as your very own! Catch me live next time at
Domkizzle  on Twitch. Hope to see you there.

Happy painting!
